Neck Pain
Neck Pain
Your neck is made up of seven vertebrae and is supported by a network of muscles, ligaments, tendons. It acts as a bridge between your head and your torso, allowing you to move your head freely as well as provide safe passage for the spinal cord to leave the brainstem and make its way down the spine.
Typically neck discomfort is most commonly caused by irritated or inflamed joints and some of the other structures in the area.
Known medically as the ‘cervical spine’, it is incredibly robust given its mobility. It supports the weight of your head, around 10-12pounds, the same weight as a bowling ball and it does this whilst providing incurable movement and stability.
However in its strength lies it’s weakness as many large muscles cross the area and many other muscles aren’t controlled by you conciously so when they’re on the verge of irritation we often don’t know.
Ever woken with a stiff neck for no reason or turned and it went into spasm, these deep postural muscles are often involved but controlling them is like controlling your digestive muscles, they do their thing independently of you!
What is the condition?
Biomechanics (how things move) plays a role in the neck’s vulnerability to injury. Extended sitting looking at screens, static positions like driving, repetitive activities, road traffic incidents, slips & falls, normal ageing and day to day activities repeated over decades can all affect cervical biomechanics.
How can a Chiropractor help?
Neck discomfort can be debilitating, interfering with daily activities such as sleeping, driving, working, spending time with friends and family, as well as the enormous psychological toll it can take, for sone leading to anxiety and depression.
Performing a thorough examination Chiropractors assess whether adjustments are suitable. Sometimes called a ‘manipulation’, the adjustments help to release the joints of the cervical vertebrae in the neck, which can help to relieve pain from muscular spasms and irritated nerves.
Often lifestyle advice and exercise are given in order to manage the complaints and minimise relapses or re-injury.
