If you’ve experienced back pain that spread into your buttock or leg, or had symptoms like numbness and/or weakness in your leg, chances are you’ve experienced sciatica.
Thankfully you’re not alone, a large proportion of the population have or will experience it. So what is it and how can Chiropractic help?
What is Sciatica?
Anything which irritates your Sciatic nerve can be called Sciatica. Muscle spasm, nerve root irritation, medication, trauma etc etc. can all irritate the largest nerve in your body!
The most common we see clinically, is often through spinal/vertebral dysfunction. Joints not moving through their full range, disc dysfunction, spinal stenosis and other conditions, can reduce the space in which the nerve resides. This can lead it becoming irritated and producing localised inflammation and pain.
Think treading on a hose pipe, the pipe is intact and fine, but the water flow is distorted! Same for the nerve, the nerve impulses it carries get distorted, which can lead to symptoms either where the nerve comes from, i.e. from the spine and or where it goes to, which will be into the leg & foot.
What are the symptoms?
Sciatica symptoms typically include:
- Leg ache that gets worse as you sit.
- Tingling or burning sensation travelling down the leg.
- Numbness, weakness, or trouble moving the foot or leg.
- Pain that makes it difficult to stand.
While sciatica pain can be incapacitating, most complaints resolve in a few weeks and Chiropractic treatment can provide gentle and natural relief to aid/improve recovery.
So how can Chiropractic help?
Sciatica pain can be very debilitating and just because it’s common doesn’t mean you have to put up with it. Chiropractic care is a popular and effective strategy for sciatica. Helping reduce the need for long-term pain relief, improve movement and speed up recovery are the aims of chiropractic care.
A personalised exercise plan can also help reduce the risk of future episodes, contact us today and find out how Chiropractic could help you!
